Theories of AgingIs Anti Aging Achievable? The search for eternal youth continues today, as it has throughout history. Anti agingthe search for ways to delay and/or lessen the effects of the aging processis big business, especially as today's baby boomers begin to feel these effects. Aging is a natural process, but can this process be corralled, or controlled? Scientists certainly hope so and research continues in earnest. In order to solve the anti aging mystery, it's important to first understand the aging process. As with many things in life, there are many theories of aging, and what follows is an overview of the main ones.

One of the theories of aging involves the oxidation of cells. When metals oxidize, they rust. When our cells oxidize, they lose an electron and become a free radical, a highly unstable cell. Free radicals also result from our environment. Smoking, pollution, and exposure to the sun are the most damaging environmental factors. As these free radicals try to stabilize, either by attaching to other healthy molecules or giving up the one that's left, they destroy these healthy molecules. It's believed that this is how problems within our bodies begin. Many experts agree that the best way to combat the oxidation process is to give our bodies antioxidants, the proper mix of vitamins and minerals derived from many fruits and vegetables, to bind with these free radicals and help stabilize them. Doing so helps these cells behave as they were designed to. Many experts conclude that a well balanced diet is an effective anti aging remedy.

Another of the common theories of aging involves changing hormone levels, especially the human growth hormones, melatonin, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The neuroendocrine system is actually a network of biochemicals which control the release of different hormones. The hypothalamus alters these hormones and acts somewhat of a coach, instructing other organs and glands within our bodies to release their hormones. Over time, the hypothalamus begins to lose its ability to properly control and instruct the release of these other hormones. Without the proper mix of hormones, our organs and other body parts don't function optimally and can lead to the development of problems within the body. If hormone levels could remain as they were in our younger years, it's believed that this would help slow the aging process. That's why hormone replacement therapy, particularly in the hypothalamus, is an area in which anti aging experts are focusing much of their efforts.

Finally, another of the common theories of aging has to do with genetics. It's believed that how long we live is directly related to the genes we inherit. Researchers support this theory by showing that parents who live long lives often have children who also live long lives and that identical twins have comparable life expectancies whereas other siblings don't. They also point out that how long we live is consistent across the species.

Regardless of which of the theories of aging you believe in, there's no doubt that caring for your body, including eating a well-balanced nutritional diet combined with exercise, is the simplest, least expensive anti aging remedy available today!
