The use of HGH (Human Growth Hormone) became an accepted medical treatment in the 1950's. It did not however, come in the synthetic form commonly used today; it was originally harvested from cadavers. This practice was halted due to the risk of developing Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, a serious brain disorder. HGH is produced naturally by the pituitary gland in different quantities depending on age.

As we get older the level of HGH present in our bodies decreases. This decrease can be the cause of certain problems such as decreased lean body mass and bone mass, thinning of the skin and reduced exercise capacity. Individuals suffering from growth hormone deficiency are also at a higher risk for cardiac health issues as a result of HGH being absent altogether.

In 1985 the FDA approved a synthetic form of HGH. It has been available as an injection since then for the treatment of human hormone growth deficiency, Turner's syndrome, chronic renal insufficiency, cachexia, continued height deficit at puberty, Prader-Willi syndrome and intrauterine growth retardation. The above mentioned are the only illnesses that have been approved by the FDA to be treated with HGH. There are those who would like to see the FDA add chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and obesityas to the list. In addition, although not illnesses, some would like to be able to use HGH as a performance enhancer or as an anti-aging treatment as well. It is very unlikely that the FDA will be approving the use of HGH for these purposes any time soon. Extensive research and study will have to precede this decision if it is ever made.

The penalty for selling HGH without a prescription could be as much as 4 years and a fine. This includes the sale of human growth hormone as a supplement. Without a medical condition, it is strictly prohibited to sell, or possess with the intention of selling HGH. This law was provided for us in the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, Section 303f.

There are companies out there selling homeopathic products, which claim to have a weakened version of HGH in them. As long as homeopathic products are sold as over the counter they are legal. According to the Compliance Policy Guide from the FDA, all homeopathic drugs must be safe and effective, must be prepared according to the specifications of the HPUS and the General Pharmacy and must be submitted in the specified format making sure to include toxicity data.

Homeopathic Products
There are many anti-aging homeopathic products out on the market. They are generally introduced orally or as a cream. Companies producing these products also claim that these pills or creams can stimulate natural production of HGH by the pituitary gland.

Enhancer Products

These products are usually available as a pill or in powder form. They do not actually contain HGH but they do contain amino acids such as glutamine, arginine, onithine, phenylalanine and lysine. Some manufacturers claim that these amino acids can increase the production of growth hormone. It is very important that people be aware that very little data is available on the safety of these products, although manufacturers claim that they are very safe and free of almost all side effects. Despite there being many products out there making claims to have the ability to boost GH production, they contain nothing that would suggest the possibility of this being true. The cost for these products ranges from $30 to $200/mo.

There is very little evidence that these homeopathic medications even work. Applying information on the prescription version of HGH to the over the counter homeopathic is inaccurate at the very least and strictly prohibited by the FDA, who requires presented information to be on the exact product. Users as well as pharmacists who sell these products should be wary of misleading advertising, which may make a promise that cannot be kept.

While there are many possibilities still ahead for the use of HGH, it is up to the FDA to make the decisions that will allow this field to move forward. As it stands there are strict limits for the use of the drug and until the necessary research is done, it is likely to remain that way.
