Weight Loss – it's on everyone's mind and it's about time. As a nation, we're getting fatter by the day. Unless we do something to reverse this trend, we're headed for disaster. It seems everywhere you turn you see advertisements for the latest and greatest weight loss diets, programs, pills and surgical procedures, all claiming fast results with minimal effort. While some claims offer a glimmer of truth, most do not. There is no magical solution for weight loss. Losing weight takes time. It's hard work. And most importantly, to be successful, many people must first change their way of life.

Until recently proper nutrition and its role in weight loss has not been a popular topic. In the minds of many, proper nutrition equates to horrific foods such as tasteless rice cakes and raw carrots. Life's too short to eat that way. We love to eat foods that taste good. Unfortunately, the best tasting foods often are the worst nutritional offenders. They're high in unhealthy fats, they're loaded with empty calories, they endanger our health and worst of all, they do nothing to contribute to our weight loss goals.

Most dieticians and nutritionists agree on one thing; for weight loss to be successful, a person's diet should consist of low fat foods consumed in moderation, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and plenty of water. By their nature, these foods fall on the low end of the calorie spectrum. The worst nutritional offenders – refined carbohydrates and saturated fats – also must be eliminated from the diet. Both of these lead to higher insulin levels which actually increase our cravings for hi-fat (calorie-rich) foods, deposit more fats in our body, and increase cholesterol levels which can lead to heart trouble.

To simplify the weight loss issue even further consider this. To lose weight you must take in fewer calories than you expend, every day. Take in the same amount as you burn and you maintain your current weight. Consume more than you burn, and you gain weight. Consume fewer than you expend and you will lose weight. This is the “magic” formula we're all in search of. It's advice we've heard all our lives, but don't take.

It might surprise you to realize that eating right doesn't have to taste bad. In fact, eating right can taste very good, if you're willing to break out of your food mold. Fresh herbs add an incredible amount of flavor to food and few calories. Roasting vegetables releases flavors you never knew they possessed and at the same time, helps them retain much of their nutritional value. These foods increase your chance of successful weight loss.

But in the end a calorie is a calorie, and there are those that argue that it's quantity that matters when weight loss is debated. So what about nutrition and its role in weight loss? Does proper nutrition matter? Eating larger portions of higher calorie foods would not be so bad IF those calories were burned off every day. Athletes do this, do you?
