A study was completed, as published by the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, on the effects of growth hormone over the long term on children with Prader-Willi syndrome. The goal was to find out whether the benefits of hgh outweighed the risks, and what specifically the benefits were.
This study looked at 27 children prior to going on human growth hormone treatment, and 21 children that were treated with hgh for 6 years. Six years is quite a long time to be on growth hormone so it is interesting to see the results. Some would say that this long of treatment would produce problems.
The measurements in this study are ones people are familiar with: percent body fat, lean mass, carb/lipid metabolism, and motor strength.
The results were impressive in favor of hgh it would seem. Take a look at the results:
For those treated with human growth hormone, 36.1% body fat as an average compared to 44.6% without any hgh.
Those who took growth hormone were taller, 131 cm, vs 114 cm. (Or, roughly 4 feet 3 inches compared to 3 feet 9 inches)
They were tested on sit ups, those taking growth hormone were able to do 12.4 situps in 30 seconds on average compared to 7.1 for those who had not taken any hgh.
The other tests all showed that those taking human growth hormone surpassed those who had not.
The study reached an impressive concluson, "hGH treatment in children with PWS, begun prior to 2 yr of age, improves body composition, motor function, height, and lipid profiles. The magnitude of these effects suggests that long-term hGH therapy favorably alters the natural history of PWS to an extent that exceeds risks and justifies consideration for initiation during infancy."
It is interesting to note that they suggest considering growth hormone even in infancy. Currently those with Prader Willi start hgh treatments between 4 and 32 months old.
The question certainly seems to be if infants can start taking growth hormone as soon as possible, what the end result for will be for them. It seems very likely that they would have even more improved results. More studies will need to be done in this area.
